Join instructors Mitch Iburg and Zoë Powell at the Oki Doki Studio in Germantown, NY to learn the foundations of working with local clays and minerals in the ceramics studio.
This 4.5-day workshop will provide guidelines on identifying, foraging, processing, and testing various materials collected from Upstate New York. Participants will learn how to use these resources to develop clay bodies, slips, and glazes. Student work will be fired to cone 6-8 in reduction.
All topics discussed in this workshop will easily translate to anyone’s home studio practice. Participants will be able to use this information to locate and test their own materials at home.
All registrants will receive a digital copy of the Studio Alluvium Workbook outlining useful geologic information, clay harvesting resources, and testing procedures.
Health and Safety
Much of this workshop will take place outdoors and participants are encouraged to dress for a variety of weather possibilities. Additionally, participants are asked to come prepared for potentially messy clay preparation.

geology review and discussion of clay origins
resources for locating materials
bulk processing techniques for clays and common non-clay materials
testing procedures for clay bodies, slips, and glazes (including line blends, triaxials, + grog tests)
interpreting finished results
Participants will need to arrange travel, meals, and lodging accommodations themselves. There is no housing available on the Oki Doki Studio campus.
